GUBBIO

GUBBIO: Palazzo Dei Consoli
Palazzo Dei Consoli

Carved into a side of a

mountain, Gubbio, with its cobble stone streets and austere grandeur, is the quintessential medieval Italian city. Since medieval times the artisans of Gubbio have specialized in ceramics, the evidence of which can be seen in the numerous shops lined along it’s main streets.

Park outside the walls then walk in - and up! This town is not for the faint-of-heart or those without decent walking shoes as everything is uphill. To get to the basilica at the very top of the town those who don't fancy the very steep walk can take the funicular: the views from all around Gubbio are spectacular.

On the 15th of May, every year is La Corsa dei Ceri (the race of the Ceri) where three teams compete in a race through the old town, wearing ancient costumes and carrying the Ceri, enormous wooden poles surmounted by statues of the three patron saints of Gubbio, Sts. Ubaldo, Georgio & Antonio.
